Quizá usted no conozca la tecnología MediaMax CD3, pero si se ha comprado un CD de música protegido con este sistema puede dar por seguro que no podrá hacer copias piratas para pasárselas a sus amigos o intercambiarlas por Internet. A menos, claro, que su teclado tenga la tecla Shift (la de las mayúsculas), puesto que es todo lo que necesita para dejar fuera de combate una de las barreras antipiratería más avanzadas del mercado.Comencemos por el principio. ¿Sabe quién es Anthony Hamilton? comprado el álbum. Halderman es un estudiante de la prestigiosa universidad estadounidense de Princeton, y desde hace poco también el verdugo de MediaMax CD3.
La tecla de las mayúsculas
Esta tecnología, desarrollada por la empresa SunnComm Technologies Inc, fue publicitada a principios de septiembre como la barrera perfecta contra la piratería musical. Los discos protegidos con este sistema pueden ser reproducidos en un ordenador, e incluso pueden copiarse al disco duro, para duplicarlos todas las veces que se quiera y luego enviarlo a cientos de amigos, en el caso de tenerlos. Ahora bien, cada canción contiene un dato adicional a los musicales: el número de veces que se puede copiar o su fecha de caducidad. Es decir, la discográfica puede dejarle a usted que haga copias del disco, pero a la vez puede decidir darle derecho para hacer sólo una o dos o las que quiera, o determinar que a partir de determinado día esas copias dejen de funcionar.
¿Qué es lo que ha descubierto John Halderman? Es tan sencillo que parece mentira: si se presiona la tecla Shift en el momento de copiar las canciones del CD al ordenador, el avanzado sistema antipiratería MediaMax CD3 queda fuera de servicio. Así lo cuenta este estudiante en su página web, según informa la CNN, y, pese a que SunnComm no ha querido hacer ningún comentario hasta el momento, una de las compañías que confío en esta tecnología, BMG (la del disco del rapero Hamilton, de hecho), sí ha reconocido que, en efecto, el truco funciona.
Windows, Apple y Linux
La clave está en que presionando esa tecla se evita que se ponga en marcha el programita del sistema operativo Windows que lanza de forma automática el sistema de protección. De hecho, basta con no dar permiso para instalar el driver (otra pequeña aplicación informática que permite al ordenador trabajar con aparatos o discos externos) que el CD intenta colocar automáticamente para echar al traste los esfuerzos de SunnComm. ¿Y qué sucede con los ordenadores que no funcionan con el sistema operativo de Microsoft —los de Apple o los gestionados por Linux—? Pues dado que MediaMax CD3 no funciona fuera del entorno Windows, lo mismo da.
¿Qué ha dicho la discográfica en cuestión? Nathaniel Brown, portavoz de BMG (parte del conglomerado Bertelsmann), ha reconocido a la agencia Reuters que “es consciente de que si alguien aprieta la tecla Shift podrá evitar la tecnología de protección”, y ha añadido que se trata de un pequeño bache en la lucha contra la piratería.
