El asteroide

Rásselas dormía cuando el panel de plasma central de la nave se activó por si solo. El cursor cuadrado parpadeaba sobre el fondo negro. Al poco comenzó a moverse por la pantalla dejando a su paso una estela de letras, las cuales cobraron sentido: “Aproximación al cuadrante #5, 345 segundos para trazar orbita sobre el objeto”
Con esto, todos los monitores del puente de mando cobraron vida iluminado la sala, miles de programas comenzaron a ejecutarse al unísono calculando tablas y algoritmos para no chocar con el gran asteroide al que se aproximaban.

El despertador de Rásselas sonó estrepitosamente despertándolo del susto; “Vaya, un día más” se dijo. En esos precisos momentos hubiera dado cualquier cosa por permanecer en la cama. Pero la tarea que debía desempeñar durante el día no tenía espera.

Con un gran tazón de Colacao en la mano y con la otra en un teclado, fue moviendo la nave en modo manual hasta situarla en la proximidad del asteroide. Lo suficientemente cerca para descender a su superficie con una escafandra, pero lo suficientemente lejos como para no correr peligro la Nave de los Sueños.
Y es que los asteroide son muy traicioneros, no cuentan con un movimiento de rotación simple. Son caóticos e impredecibles dado su origen. Muchos son los restos de un gran objeto destruido por el impacto de otro asteroide o un cometa. También pueden ser pedazos de un planeta fallido a cauda de las mareas gravitatorias de otro mayor cercano.

Este es extraño. Se encuentra en medio de ninguna parte… dentro de una nebulosa con el mismo nombre… el Reloj de Arena. No hay estrellas cercanas, no hay sistemas próximos. Solo ese polvo verde fluorescente y la roca en su centro.

Nuestro amigo se colocó el traje para la exploración espacial y salió al exterior.
La superficie de aquel oscuro planetoide parecía un queso, agujereado con miles de huecos y oquedades profundas hasta su médula.
Daba miedo asomarse a aquellas ventanas de negrura, a aquellos abismos infernales.
No se podía explicar cómo un objeto de apenas un par de kilómetros de diámetro podía parecer tan sumamente hueco que podría albergar a todo el universo en su interior.

No lo dudo, sacó fuerzas de flaqueza y accionó el pequeño propulsor de su mochila. Con un ligero vaivén, su cuerpo se introdujo en la negrura azabache de lo desconocido.
