El Jurado (Runaway Jury)
Normalmente, cuando adaptan alguna de mis novelas favoritas a la gran pantalla me echo a temblar. Y no es para menos, después de ver cómo los de Disney cambiaban la genial historia de Jack London, Colmillo Blanco, hasta convertirla en un cuento para niños y cómo Madamme Doubtfire se convertía en la típica comedia.
El Jurado es uno de esos libros que me enganchó casi desde la primera página. En parte, lo reconozco, debido a mi ancestral odio contra la industria tabacalera, pero también por el interés que Grisham es capaz de dotar a un proceso en apariencia tan aburrido como es la selección de un jurado, y, sobre todo, por la misteriosa y gran personalidad de tres de los protagonistas de la historia: Nicholas Easter, Marlee y Rankin Fitch.
Nada más empezar la película me sorprendió que hubieran cambiado por completo el trasfondo. Jacob Wood ya no era un anciano muerto por cáncer de pulmón tras años de consumir productos de la tabacalera Pynex, sino un agente de bolsa muerto en un tiroteo en su propia oficina. Celeste Wood, por tanto, pasaba de ser una vieja viuda a una joven viuda con su correspondiente retoño. Por tanto, era una compañía armamentística, y no tabacalera, la demandada.
Pero ahí no acababan los cambios. En el libro, tanto Wendall Rohr como Durrwood Cable (abogados de la acusación y de la defensa, respectivamente) utilizaban el mismo juego sucio y tenían a su disposición una idéntica plantilla de selección de jurados. En la película, a Cable casi ni lo vemos, y Rohr se convierte en el típico abogado idealista, algo inocentón y convencido de que la verdad acabará ganando sin tener que recurrir a ninguna treta. Muy emotivo.
Idéntico cambio sufren Easter y Marlee. Si sus homólogos literarios eran personajes seguros de sí mismos, dueños de la situación y en apariencia implacables en su juego de coacción, en la gran pantalla se ha querido dotar a los protagonistas de cierto lado humano y alguna que otra inseguridad. Hasta cierto punto me gusta, pero desvirtúa a los personajes; el Nicholas Easter original jamás hubiera pensado en abandonar su empresa, y en libro Marlee le plantaba cara a Fitch en numerosas ocasiones y con una facilidad asombrosa. Esto hace que el final de la historia también cambie. Sin querer desvelar mucho, tras leer la última página la impresión que te quedaba era la de que Easter y Marlee habían ganado. En los créditos de la película, sin embargo, tienes la sensación de que es la verdad la ganadora. Un cambio muy a gusto del cine, supongo.
Gracias a Dios, Rankin Fitch sigue siendo Rankin Fitch, y, encima, magníficamente interpretado por Gene Hackman (aunque quizás con menos poder y autoridad del que goza en el libro original). Es de agradecer, además, que hayan respetado casi la totalidad de los nombres literarios, incluso de los jurados más insignificantes como el suplente Philip Savelle. Y la película, pese a los cambios que he mencionado (que, sin duda, eran necesarios para transformar un libro de semejante temática en algo más interesante para el público en general) sigue siendo tan interesante como el libro de Grisham. Un libro que, por cierto, aprovecho para recomendar a quien aún no lo conozca.
